February is Heart Health Month. Believe it or not, but the foods you eat can determine the healthiness of your heart, as well as other factors. The types of fats and carbohydrates that you choose can make a huge difference:
- Avoid foods with high saturated and trans fats as those found in processed foods. Instead steer your meals towards food rich in mono and polyunsaturated fats and oils. This can include salmon, nuts (such as almonds), seeds (such as sunflower and flax), and olive oil. - Unrefined carbohydrates are a better choice than highly refined carbohydrate foods. Unrefined carbohydrates include legumes, whole grains, vegetables and fruits. The more aware you are of the choices you make daily the better you heart will be for it. |
