Stress has become a natural part of everyone's lives. Some people are more able to cope than others. These stress-busting herbs can assist in your quest to reduce or alleviate stress:

- Valerian: This herb is widely used in China to treat nervous conditions and insomnia, and in Europe as a sedative. Valerian is normally taken one hour before bedtime to help with insomnia or, in smaller doses, two or three times per day to help relieve performance anxiety and stress. It is said that the effects of taking Valerian may not be noticed until two or three weeks after your first intake. Side effect of taking this herb is rare but can include headaches and feelings similar to stimulation.

- Siberian Ginseng: This is a root that is part of the ginseng family and is said to build resistance to stress. It helps your body adapt to stress and reduces fatigue. This herb is also a stimulant and should not be taken right before bed. It also should not be confused with other ginseng types, since they all have different effects on the body and it's processes.

- Passionflower: This herb can usually be found in North America. Combined with Valerian it is said to be a good remedy for insomnia, anxiety and irritability. Passionflower use is most popular in Europe.

- Kava: This herb is used in both short term and long term cases for the treatment of anxiety, tension, fear and insomnia. Kava has a natural tranquilizing effect on the brain and should thus NEVER be used in conjunction with alcohol, prescription antidepressants, benzodiazepine, tranquilizers, or sleeping pills.

These are just a few of the herbs available on the market to help combat stress. If you are suffering from anxiety or stress, be sure to consult your doctor before experimenting with any of the herbs mentioned above. They all carry their own individual side effects and can prove to have negative effects if mixed with the wrong medicine, supplements or herbs.
